We have seen the reported numbers of women opting out climb from 200,000 to 800,000 and now to 3,000,0000 (CBSNEWS). The double-burden of managing both "career and caregiving" took its toll with the bulk of the second inordinately falling on women during the pandemic. COVID-19 was the straw that broke the camels back per se, causing many women to opt out.
